Thank You, Shit-ily.

Summertime should be a slow time at work.

Except in the agency world.

Often, clients’ new fiscal years begin July 1st… Which means from mid-June through the end of July, things are chaos.

It always happens, no matter how prepared you think you are for it.

So I’ve learned to mostly not take time off this time of year.

Things move so fast, I’m always worried about forgetting something. Or that someone else has forgotten something. Or that I am assuming one person will do something, when they have no idea they are supposed to do it. Or vice versa.

Or that I am not remembering my manners and saying “thank you.”

So I try to set the example to always be over-thankful. For every single thing. Even for the most simple of things.

“I logged into the meeting early.” (Oh thank you so much for doing that!)

“I refrained from booking into your Friday, since we are all trying to be ‘heads down’ on those days.” (Oh wow! Thank you for remembering! I really appreciate that!)

“I’m here just to remind you that the sky is blue.” (This is a huge help! Thank you, kindly!)

Others have picked up this habit too. Or, perhaps they’ve been this kind and aggressively thankful the whole time, and I am just now noticing it?

(I’m such a self-absorbed bi-atch.)

Anyway… When a person on my teams said, “Thank you, kindly” to me… I laughed.

“Next time say, ‘Thank you, shit-ily,” I told them.

They promised to do so.

We needed the laugh. It’s too intense and chaotic.

Maybe now that July is past us, life can feel more manageable.

And less shit-ily.

I get up at 5:30am every day, no matter what day it is. I make my bed every morning. I drink a modest amount of coffee while reading two digital newspapers and watching the news. I make sure my roommate, George, has food and water. (George is an Australian Cattle Dog.) Then I can start my day. This is my morning routine.
